Lindt To Burn Cocoa Shells For Power

This is awesome. Burning an industrial byproduct to power the industrial process. Rather smart stuff happening here!

Lindt & Sprüngli (USA), Inc. plans to burn its cocoa shells to produce electricity in a power plant owned by Public Service of New Hampshire.

In March 2009, Lindt tested burning the shells and determined the remains could be integrated in one of its power plant’s coal boilers. The company says it is reducing its own carbon impact by shortening the production process, and by disposing of byproducts in a responsible way.

Every ton of cocoa shells used to generate electricity will replace one half-ton of coal and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide the plant would produce while burning fossil fuels. New Hampshire’s Department of Environmental Services approved the plan to use cocoa bean shells as a supplementary fuel source at the plant.

Lindt: Premium Chcoolate Market Will Improve

Although Lindt & Sprüngli AG experienced 2.3 percent organic growth and expanded its market share in 2009, the Swiss chocolate maker says its 1.9 percent drop in annual sales is indicative of the still-difficult market conditions for premium chocolate.

In the U.S., sales demonstrated “above-average development especially in the second half of the year,” the company added. It said both the Lindt and Ghirardelli brands gained market share in the U.S., while growth in Europe was “modest.”

Higher commodity prices especially for cocoa were cited as continuing to challenge profits in the first half of 2010, while a more positive outlook was offered for the third and fourth quarters.

Hershey Co., the U.S. candy maker, dropped its trademark-infringement lawsuit against Swiss rival Lindt & Sprungli AG over wrapper designs for their competing peanut butter candies.

Hershey sued Lindt and its U.S.-based Ghirardelli unit in January for allegedly copying the “distinctive” orange wrappers used for Hershey’s Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup and Reese’s Pieces products. Hershey, without giving a reason, agreed to drop the claims, according to a Nov. 25 filing in federal court in San Francisco.
